Biography[]

Pre-Tolleson Trial[]

Anna was a caseworker for the foster care system who was eventually assigned the files for Mildred Ratched and Edmund Tolleson after their placements together fell through. Seeing how the two children were attached to each other after experiencing abuse together, she falsified their paperwork to list them as biological siblings, which would allow her to insist they be placed together. Because of her kind nature and honest want to help, she became a guardian angel figure for the siblings[1].

Eventually she found what she believed was a good family for the two, unaware of the family's plans for Mildred and Edmund. After Edmund's murder of the parents, she was horrified to discover Mildred and Edmund had been forced to perform sexual acts on each other and blamed herself for not protecting them[1][2].

Post-Tolleson Trial[]

Years later, Anna was able to eventually track down Mildred to the Sealight Inn and speak to her on Edmund. She brought paperwork that revealed to Mildred Edmund's murders had been ruled justifiable homicides, and was surprised to find out Mildred had managed to track down Edmund to the home for delinquent boys he'd been assigned to. When Mildred explained how losing him was payback for leaving him behind, Anna insisted there was nothing Mildred could have done, as Edmund was too broken at that point. She revealed to Mildred the story of Edmund's mother, and how he had been a product of rape by one of the priests he had murdered. She pleaded with Mildred not to waste her life trying to save Edmund, who was past the point of saving, and comforted Mildred as she wept[2].

Character Creation & Development[]

The inclusion of Rosanna Arquette as Anna in Ratched was a deliberate one, ultimately stemming from interviews Arquette made relaying her difficulty in finding work after being one of the first women to make accusations of sexual misconduct against Harvey Weinstein. In response, Sarah Paulson, in her position as Executive Producer of Ratched, as well as fellow Executive Producer Ryan Murphy made the joint decision to cast Arquette in Ratched with a "multi-episode arc" to stand in solidarity with her, as well as honor her talent as an actress. Paulson announced the casting via an Instagram post just a few days before filming for Ratched began.[3][4].
